Last week, we had the pleasure of going to the CASC tournament with 37 students from our school. Our Varsity team was joined by two students from QSI Bishkek who brought a fresh aspect to the team and the benefit of a longer team list - crucial in such exhausting tournaments. Thanks to
Vova and Kazi for joining us! During the tournament, seven schools competed with all teams playing seven games in two days.
The only exceptions were the JV boys who played 8 game! The total number of 129 games being played over the course of the tournament is a testament to just how big this
tournament is. Our Varsity Girls (VG) team had only 9 students with some overcoming previous injuries to participate. Coaching a smaller team where
recovery from injuries needs to be considered is no easy feat but Coach Hollis kept spirits high! Playing for 40 minutes, often without a substitute, is very
difficult task and our VG team left being heroes of the competition. Whilst all our VG players showed commitment and dedication, our goalkeeper, Igana, was selected as the All-Star player of the team.
Our Junior Varsity Girls team played a fantastic tournament. Tactically, Coach Krisha prepared
them perfectly for the last match. They, unfortunately, lost a close 15th Newsletter for BIS Parents and Friends. No: 13 / 2019-20 November 2019 match in the quarterfinals because the opponent (AIS) scored two brilliant headers that could not be defended. The JVG team proved that no matter how young you are or how little time you’ve been playing a sport; you can play matches like you were born to be on the pitch! Our forward striker, Eva Aijan, was selected as the All-Star JVG player of the tournament. We also want to take this opportunity to thank our P2 teacher and the girls’ main mentor, Coach Shelby, who was not able to travel with us but put in endless time and energy to prepare our players for the tournament.
Our Junior Varsity boys came fifth after two days of competition. Some matches they won, some they lost but they did not lose team spirit no matter the score. They played their last match against TSIS and unfortunately lost to the Nomad’s Team. Our coach, Mr. Darren, did a great job leading the matches ensuring his squad was rotating – allowing everyone to be played and all players to have the opportunity for rest when tired. Like our VG team, only having 9 players is exhausting but our players remained strong as a team and didn’t let this get the better of them. Frithjof was selected as our BIS All-Star JVB player of the tournament. After two days and six games, the Varsity boys finished fifth. In the quarterfinals, they played against Astana. In the regular part of the game, the score ended at 1-1 leading to a heart-racing penalty shootout. Whilst we ended up losing to Astana, our team did a great job at competing against a team who had beat them just the day before with a 2-0 win. Our coach, Mr. Jacques, hid some tactical ideas for the quarterfinals.
Everything was great up to the penalties - which is often considered a lottery! We are proud to announce that Kutman was selected as BIS VB All-Star player of the tournament. All teams in the tournament gathered for a closing ceremony where the winners and All-Star players were announced. We are especially proud of the sportsmanship values and attitude that all our players modelled throughout the tournament. This was also recognised by coaches of the remaining six schools who voted for our Varsity Boys team to receive the overall Sportsmanship Trophy for their category. Their commitment to fair play and supporting for each other as a team, as well as supporting the VG girls team, was unrivalled and this is
a great honour for the school.
